Ascend

Ascend

Ascend explores two themes – passage and threshold – and the relationship between them. Although the works are technically careful and the forms resolved, they have a paradoxically poetic resonance. Offering multiple viewpoints, the works include stairs, voids, gateways, bridges, corridors and paths of various scale. The intimacy of the artworks is an invitation to look closely, cross thresholds and to be curious about the invisible and unknowable. They suggest ever changing movement toward a source or beginning.

Sculpture has an inherent connection with time; the works in Ascend have required nearly two years to complete. Works are both glazed and unglazed; glazes have been developed and tested specifically for these works. Various clay bodies have been developed by the studio and used to create the forms.
